The book is a first person narrative of our main character Ryan as he deal with, life, love, lose, pursuit of happiness and gambling.Īs I am sure from the book cover, the ending is not hard to guess, but it is not the result that matters, but rather the journey.īeem does a great job of showing all sides of the story's character. Jason Beem combines his experiences as both a recovering gambling addict, and race caller to take the reader on a trip rarely seen outside those who live it first hand. Most books written on horse racing are on finding winners or making money at the races Very few books about horse racing deal with the darker side of the game. I started reading this book because I love horse racing and follow Jason on Twitter Beem has taken us through a colorful, terrifying rollercoaster ride through the world of horse racing and gambling with this book, and I look forward to anything he writes in the future. I would recommend this book to anyone who has even an inkling of interest about horse racing I expect many in the industry have already given it a spin, and I've seen nothing but positive reviews from them, too. It flows well together, the characters are relatable, and the language is down-to-earth and visceral, with no pretention about it whatsoever.

This is an easy read, but that's not an insult. The book ends in a downward spiral that will put tears in your eyes and an ending that left me wanting to know more about the character's fate. McGuire goes through many hardships throughout, and, as the addiction siezes him once more, it gets worse and worse throughout. Of course, he does not shy away from the ugliness, either. And he makes horse racing beautiful - not in the wordy, happy-go-lucky way that many revert to, but in the little details, the colors, the characters, the horses themselves. For those connected to the industry, the subtle nods at various horses and personages in the game will put a smile on your face.

I was so drawn into the story and eager to find out what happened next that I eventually just read it all in one fell swoop, taking an evening off so I could have my nose in this book. I was not disappointed in the least by Southbound. (Seriously, go follow him on You'll thank me.) I probably would have picked up Southbound to read, anyway, but as it was, it's written by Jason Beem, one of the funniest guys in horse racing today.
